What is a Woman? Why is this a topic of discussion in 2025?

What is a Woman? The conversation about what it means to be a woman has become pretty heated, especially regarding the participation of trans women in women's sports. The fact that many people in today's society are debating this has really blown my mind and has hurt my heart because of how it’s affecting the younger generation. This has raised some critical questions about gender identity and biological differences, making it essential to dive into this topic, particularly from a theological viewpoint.
Biblical Take on Gender (Genesis 1-2):
The Bible lays out some foundational ideas about gender right from the start. In Genesis 1:27, it mentions, “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Furthermore, Genesis 2:21-23 talks about God making Eve from Adam's rib, highlighting how men and women complement each other. These verses present a pretty straightforward, binary view of gender that has been around since creation, showing that both genders reflect God's image.
The Fall's Effect on Gender Roles (Genesis 3):
Genesis 3 tells the story of the fall when Adam and Eve went against God’s wishes. This event brought sin into the world and messed with how we see ourselves and interact with each other. The confusion we see today around gender identity can be viewed as a shift away from the biblical perspective on gender roles.
New Testament Views on Gender Roles:
In the New Testament, Jesus backs up the creation story regarding gender. In Matthew, He talks about divorce and refers back to Genesis, mentioning, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female?” This reaffirms the unique roles that men and women play as part of God’s design. Plus, the Apostle Paul touches on gender differences in his letters, including those to the Corinthians and Galatians.
Joining the Cultural Conversation (Ephesians 4:15):
Ephesians 4:15 points out the importance of discussing gender identity with a mix of truth and love: “But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, that is, Christ.” To have meaningful conversations about gender, we need to root our discussions in the Gospel, acknowledging everyone’s worth and staying true to biblical principles. Believers must show compassion, just like Jesus did, as we navigate these complicated cultural topics.
